Legal disclaimer
The information provided on this page is only a general and superficial explanation of how website operators should draft their own privacy policy. This article does not constitute reliable legal advice or actual recommendations for action, as we cannot assess business relationships with customers and visitors in advance. We therefore recommend that website operators seek legal advice and support when drafting their own privacy policy.
Data privacy policy - the basics
A privacy policy is a statement that discloses some or all of the ways in which a website collects, uses, discloses, processes, and manages personal information about its visitors and customers. It typically also includes a statement of the website's commitment to protecting the privacy of its visitors or customers and an explanation of the various mechanisms the website implements to protect privacy.
Different jurisdictions have different requirements for the content of a privacy policy. Website operators are therefore responsible for complying with the relevant legislation for their activities and location.
Content of a privacy policy
In general, a privacy policy covers these topics: the type of personal information a website collects and how that information is collected; the website's practices in sharing the information with third parties; ways in which visitors and customers can exercise their rights under relevant privacy laws; the specific practices regarding the collection of information from minors; and more.
